Event narrative
Sustained winds very briefly peaked near 40 mph in the morning hours and then more consistently peaked between 40 and 49 mph during the afternoon and early evening hours. A maximum wind gust of 60 mph was observed at the South Dakota Road Weather Information System site near Ward (SD 577).
Wider weather episode
A strong pressure gradient and elevated winds atop a well mixed boundary layer ahead of a low pressure system across Nebraska resulted in high winds across southeast South Dakota mainly during the afternoon and evening hours of April 6th. Multiple automated stations reported maximum wind gusts at or above 58 mph. In a couple instances, these high winds were aided by nearby rain showers.
