NOS / COOPS station at Sandy Hook measured a 41 knot wind gust.

Thunderstorms developed just west of the area in an environment characterized by weak to moderate instability and moderate deep-layer shear. As the storms approached the waters, they formed into a cluster and became strong to severe. The cluster of storms produced damaging wind gusts.
