Event narrative

Drought conditions worsened the Severe (D2) by mid-July, but beneficial rainfall during the latter half of the month improved the drought to Moderate (D1) by July 30.

Wider weather episode

Dry conditions across north and central Alabama during the month of June led to the onset of drought conditions by early July. Some areas quickly progressed to Severe (D2) and even Extreme (D3) drought during the month. However, an increase in rainfall area-wide during the latter half of July resulted in marked improvements in drought conditions by the beginning of August.
