Flash Flood — Kane, Utah

2024-07-21 · near Glen Cnyn Bsn Arpt, Kane, Utah

Event narrative

A BLM Ranger reported a large flash flood of Dry Valley Creek where it meets Rock Springs Creek. The flash flood waters were reported to by up to 4-6 feet deep given a water mark left behind that was higher than the vehicle. Further south, a BLM Ranger reported flash flooding near the Old Town Paria site, with a couple feet of water reportedly flowing off the surrounding terrain and into the Paria River. Times estimated.

Wider weather episode

A largely ridge-dominated pattern persisted, resulting in anomalously warm temperatures. These hot temperatures resulted in at least one instance of a heat related fatality. Despite the strong ridge, enough moisture continued to work into the area and help in the development of diurnal convection, some of which resulted in flash flooding over more rain sensitive areas.
