Event narrative

A tree fell onto power lines along State Route 683.

Wider weather episode

While a low-pressure system spun over the Great Lakes region, active weather extended down into the Middle Ohio Valley and Central Appalachians. Disturbances embedded in this system provided support for showers and storms across the area. An initial round of sub-severe activity occurred with the passage of one such disturbance early on August 17th. Following a brief break, more robust convection began to develop in Ohio and Kentucky as a second upper disturbance moved overhead that afternoon. Broken lines of showers and storms progressed toward the Ohio River by mid-afternoon, downing a tree and power lines in Vinton County before storms pushed east into West Virginia.
