A line of strong thunderstorms moved across north central and northeast South Dakota during the morning of July 31st. Wind damage started near Britton, with a tower blown down at the ballpark and several grain bins knocked over. Thunderstorm winds continued east flipping pontoon boats near Lake City. A peak wind gust of 92 mph was measured at the Hillhead Remote Automatic Weather Station around the same time that a roof was partly blow off of a dairy barn near Veblen. That complex of storms continued east into Minnesota during the early afternoon, with additional thunderstorms developing across northeast South Dakota during the afternoon. Those storms produced hail to the size of half-dollars 3 miles north of Sisseton and sporadic tree damage in Codington and Hamlin counties.
