A strong upper-level high-pressure system covered the Lower Mississippi Valley at the end of July. Persistent moist southwest flow brought high dewpoints into the region. Hot temperatures combined with dewpoints well into the 70s resulted in widespread afternoon heat index values above 110 degrees.
