A fire sparked in a farmers field in North Dakota spread rapidly southeast due to ambient dry conditions and strong northwest winds, with the nearby Department of Transportation mesonet 5 miles west northwest of McLaughlin recording a peak wind gust of 49 mph. Approximately 1600 acres of grass and farmland were burned by the fire, which managed to partially cross portions of South Dakota highway 63 before being extinguished.
