To start September, the middle third of Sheridan County was in D-3 Extreme Drought, with a majority of the remainder of the county remaining in D-2 Severe drought. On the last week of September the western border of Sheridan County improved to D-1 Moderate drought.

Wider weather episode

Despite some locally heavy rains over portions of northeast Montana in August, drought conditions continued to persist or intensify across the region.
