Event narrative
Nearly 5 inches of rain fell between August 15th through August 19th, as reported by the Dahl Creek precipitation gage. The Kobuk River at Kobuk responded by rising into town after the first crest on August 20th. Kobuk experienced water over roadways and beneath homes and some citizens were unable to vote due to the flooding. An additional 2 inches of rain fell between August 21st and 23rd, resulting in water once again rising into town.
Wider weather episode
A series of storms dropped copious amounts of rainfall across northern Alaska from August 15th through the 23rd. This rainfall caused rapid rises on streams and rivers which resulted in localized flooding of low-lying areas along northern Interior rivers.
