Wider weather episode
A cold front advanced eastward from the Great Lakes into the area, and provided a lifting mechanism for convective development during the afternoon and evening hours of September 21. Despite only modest instability and limited shear, though with additional support from an upper level jet streak, multicellular and lines of storms were still able to develop, mainly along the Blue Ridge before tracking east. Some of these storms were severe across the Piedmont and Foothills of Virginia, with many reports of wind damage in this region.
