Event narrative
A winter storm produced 6 to 8 inches of snow across Sullivan County with higher elevations receiving 13 to 15 inches of snow from the evening of November 21 through the early afternoon hours of November 22, 2024. Heavy, wet snow coupled with gusty winds knocked down multiple trees and wires across the county, resulting in approximately 70% of the county being without power during the event. State Routes 487 and 87 were both closed for a period of time due to trees and wires being knocked down on the roadway.
Wider weather episode
An area of low pressure across New England began slowly moving westward during the late evening hours of November 21 and into November 22, 2024 allowing for a long-duration snow event for portions of central Pennsylvania. A strong pressure gradient northwest of the area of low pressure also allowed for gusty winds throughout the event with a wet snow prompting multiple trees and wires down throughout portions of Sullivan County, resulting in over 70% of the county having no power. There were also multiple roads closed across portions of Cambria and Somerset Counties with disabled vehicles, trees/wires down, and jack-knifed trailers.
