Event narrative
A winter storm produced heavy snow across Somerset County from the early morning of November 22, 2024 through the late evening. Snowfall totals ranged from 6 to 12 inches with higher elevations seeing 14 to 18 inches of snow. A jackknifed trailer caused US-219 north to be closed for a period of time. PA-403 was also closed near Conemaugh Township due to downed trees and wires.
Wider weather episode
An area of low pressure across New England began slowly moving westward during the late evening hours of November 21 and into November 22, 2024 allowing for a long-duration snow event for portions of central Pennsylvania. A strong pressure gradient northwest of the area of low pressure also allowed for gusty winds throughout the event with a wet snow prompting multiple trees and wires down throughout portions of Sullivan County, resulting in over 70% of the county having no power. There were also multiple roads closed across portions of Cambria and Somerset Counties with disabled vehicles, trees/wires down, and jack-knifed trailers.
