Event narrative

A trained spotter reported 10.0 inches of wet snow at 1 WNW Monroe, while cocorahs observers reported 12.8 inches in Port Jervis, 8.2 inches at 4 SSE Chester, and 7.2 inches in Warwick. There was a public report of 4.1 inches at 2 SSW Stewart Airport. From Broadcast Media (News 12 Hudson Valley) the following impacts were reported: Parts of the area saw several inches of thick, slushy snow during the overnight hours into the morning commute. And while the precipitation is much needed after months without rain, the sudden conditions downed utility lines and trees; caused outages and, according to state police, dozens of accidents. Also, Slick roads and high winds remain a concern and utility officials say, as of late afternoon, there were more than 4,000 customers without power. In Warwick, a transformer fire on Newport Bridge Road left dozens in that neighborhood without power. I-84 westbound was shut down during the morning commute from exits 15 to 4 due to multiple disabled tractor-trailers and motor vehicle accidents, according to state police, with the roadway opened by late morning.

Wider weather episode

An occluded low pressure system brought heavy rain on the front end, with a change to heavy wet accumulating snow in higher elevations as the upper level low approached. Their were much lower amounts in lower elevations. The upper low swung through on the back end of the system early on the 22nd resulted in height falls and colder air working in changing the precipitation to mainly wet snow across portions of the interior, especially in elevated locations.
