Winter Weather — Franklin, Illinois
2024-11-30 · Franklin, Illinois
Wider weather episode
Light to moderate snow overspread the area during the late morning and afternoon hours on the 30th, as a clipper system moved through. A localized band of heavier snow developed that evening along Interstate 64, causing reduced visibility below 1 mile. Snowfall rates between 0.5 to 1.0 inch per hour had occurred into the night before tapering off to lingering flurries around Midnight, causing snow accumulations between 2 to 4 inches. Outside the snow band, a sharp cut off to the south resulted only in 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation. Snow initially was confined to grassy and elevated surfaces, but a combination of nightfall and heavier intensity eventually overcame warm pavement temperatures. Temperatures initially near 32 to 34 degrees fell into the 20s that night. This led to icy and slick roadway conditions on untreated surfaces. Key Impacts: transportation delays.
