Wider weather episode

Snow that began on November 30th continued into the early morning hours of December 1st, as a clipper system moved through. A localized band of heavier snow had developed that night along Interstate 64, causing reduced visibility below 1 mile. Snowfall rates between 0.5 to 1.0 per hour were ongoing, causing another inch of snowfall. Total snowfall accumulations were between 4 to 5 inches across portions of Southern Gibson, Northeast Posey, Northern Vanderburgh, and Northwest Warrick counties. Outside the snow band, a sharp cut off resulted in only 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation across most of Southwest Indiana. Snow initially was confined to grassy and elevated surfaces, but a combination of nightfall and heavier intensity eventually overcame warm pavement temperatures. Temperatures initially near 32 to 34 degrees fell into the 20s that night. This led to treacherous conditions from patches of black ice on I-69, I-64 and US-41, causing over a dozen accidents along with injuries. The lack of sunlight prior to the event caused roadway treatment to not be as effective. Multiple slideoffs had occurred on I-69 in Vanderburgh County. A Nissan Altima crashed on I-69 near the 25 mile marker in Gibson County. 911 calls about crashes continued for several hours after snow had ended. Key Impacts: transportation delays, traffic accidents.
