Heavy Snow — Otsego, New York

2024-11-28 · Otsego, New York

Event narrative

Snow accumulated between 3 and 8 inches.

Wider weather episode

A disturbance ejecting into the central Plains phased with a northern jet stream branch feature and a surface low formed over the Ohio Valley during the evening of Wednesday, the 27th. The surface low tracked to the northeast and crossed over Southeast Pennsylvania Thursday, Thanksgiving morning, on the 28th and quickly reached southern New England by the afternoon. Precipitation started out as a mix of rain and snow late Wednesday night before changing over to snow in most areas and continued through Thursday morning. As the low tracked northward, a surge of warmer air aloft also pushed north causing a mix and even a changeover to plain rain at times along the Southern Tier and southern Catskills Thursday. With marginal temperatures in place, this event produced a heavy, wet snow which was elevation dependent. Scattered power outages did occur with the heavy weight of the snow.
