Wider weather episode
A fast moving clipper system approached from the overnight hours of the 4th through the early morning hours of the 5th. The initial clipper system then weakened across southwest Quebec province early on the 5th...transferring energy to a new low developing along the Downeast coast. This secondary low rapidly intensified while tracking northeast across the region through the 5th and exiting across the Maritimes during the 6th. Snow expanded across the region through the evening of the 4th into the early morning hours of the 5th. Snow persisted through much of the afternoon of the 5th with snowfall rates up to around 1 inch per hour at times. Warning criteria snow accumulations occurred through the morning into the early afternoon hours of the 5th. Storm total snow accumulations from northwest Aroostook county...southward across Piscataquis county...generally ranged from 6 to 8 inches with local totals up to around 10 inches across portions of central and southern Piscataquis county. Storm total snow accumulations across eastern portions of Aroostook and northern Penobscot counties generally ranged from 5 to 7 inches. Across northern areas...south/southeast winds gusted to 30 to 35 mph in advance of the initial clipper system. West winds gusted to 35 to 40 mph in the wake of the secondary low across northern areas. These winds contributed to blowing and drifting snow at times across northern areas. Warmer air...to the south of the low track...led to a snow/rain mix across Downeast areas which limited snow accumulations there. A strong low level jet produced 40 to 50 mph wind gusts along the Downeast coast during the morning of the 5th.
