Event narrative

The highest observation during the heavy snow event was a trained spotter report of 8 inches of snow measured in the village of Roan Mountain at an elevation of 3800 feet. In addition, the CO-OP observer of Roan Mountain State Park recorded 4 inches of snow, four inches of snow was measured at 2600 feet on Iron Mountain near Butler, and 5 inches of snow was measured at 3900 feet in the Upper Shell Creek area.

Wider weather episode

An upper level shortwave pivoting through the mean flow enhanced a typical northwest flow setup for snow and brought accumulating snow to portions of northeastern Tennessee. Orographic lift contributed to heavy snowfall in the foothills and mountains of East Tennessee.
