2025-01-21 · Tallapoosa, Alabama

Wider weather episode

A large trough brought a cold, dry airmass to much of the southern United States January 18 and 19, which lingered for several days with sub-freezing temperatures as far south as the Gulf Coast. By late on January 20, an area of low pressure moved eastward across the Gulf of Mexico from Texas, with moisture pushing eastward along and north of the coastline. This led to a historic snowstorm across southeast Texas, southern Louisiana, the Mississippi Gulf Coast region, southern and southeastern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and much of Georgia and the Carolinas. In Central Alabama, mainly counties along and southeast of the Interstate 85 corridor were affected, receiving anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of snowfall in the Auburn, Phenix City, Union Springs, Troy, and Eufaula areas and points between. Snowfall began around midday or early afternoon before ending between 6 and 8 PM. Areas north of the Interstate 85 corridor remained too dry at the surface to see any snow, as near zero or negative dew points and large dew point depressions could not be overcome.
