Wider weather episode
Strong northwest upslope winds in the wake of a cold front interacted with moisture across the Tennessee Valley and the western slopes of the Appalachians to produce frequent snow showers across the counties bordering Tennessee throughout the afternoon and evening of the 21st through the morning of the 22nd. Heavy snowfall impacted much of the western half or so of Avery County, where general totals were in the 3 to 7 inch range. Snowfall across much of the remainder of the area north of I-40 was in the 2 to 4 inch range, with lower totals in the valleys beneath the Smokies. However, the higher elevations along the Tennessee border reported totals in the 5-10 range, with even higher amounts on some of the higher peaks and ridgetops. The accumulating snow tapered off during the morning of the 22nd, although flurries and occasional light snow showers persisted through the end of the day.
