Winter Weather — Northern Westchester, New York

2025-01-19 · Northern Westchester, New York

Event narrative

A Cocorahs observer reported 4.5 inches at 2.8 NNE Peekskill and 3.6 inches at Armonk early the following morning. During the evening higher totals of 5.5 inches were reported at Croton-on-Hudson and Ossining via the public. Also during the evening a public report of 6.0 inches was received from 1 SE Croton-on-Hudson (the only one at 6 inches). A Cooperative observer reported 4.3 at Shrub Oak. Thus the far northern portions of the county did have a few reports close to 6 inches, but the zone easily averaged below warning criteria.

Wider weather episode

A cold front pushed through, with a secondary cold frontal boundary lingering back to the west. Low pressure formed along the boundary and began to strengthen as it pulled away quickly to the east and northeast. The accumulating snow was generated mainly from frontogenetical forcing which occurred to the north and west of the developing surface low. Winter Storm criteria was reached in Orange and Putnam Counties, but fell just short of warning criteria across Northern Westchester. The remainder of SE New York either achieved advisory criteria or fell just short of advisory criteria.
