Event narrative

SNOW SQUALL. An RWIS sensor on US Route 22 near Cresson reported a sharp drop in visibility below a quarter-mile, with a slight drop in surface and road temperatures. During the snow squall, roads became snow-covered quickly with sub-freezing temperatures at onset.

Wider weather episode

Enhanced northwesterly flow in the wake of a surface cold front stationed east of Pennsylvania, coupled with marginal surface-based CAPE allowed for locally heavier snow bands and squalls to form across western Pennsylvania during the afternoon and evening hours of January 1, 2025. A snow squall was observed in Cambria County, with webcams and observations outlining a sharp decline in visibility and roads quickly becoming snow-covered with temperatures well-below freezing at precipitation onset.
