Wider weather episode
A strong, moist winter storm had moved through eastern Utah and western Colorado in the days prior to this dense fog event. Accumulating snow had made it down the floor of the Grand Valley, particularly in areas west of Fruita toward the Utah border. With warm air advection aloft and moisture and cold surface temperatures, the development of dense fog was favored on the morning of the 27th.
