Winter Storm — Boyd, Kentucky
2025-01-05 to 2025-01-06 · Boyd, Kentucky
Wider weather episode
The start of January was active across eastern Kentucky as a result of a significant winter storm sailing over the area from January 5th through the 6th. Wintry precipitation first arrived to the area during the late morning hours on the 5th, generally remaining as snow in the process. Pockets of freezing rain occurred across central Kentucky and south-central West Virginia, but eastern Kentucky did not report a change over to ice accumulations during the course of the event. Otherwise, during the time of slightly warmer temperatures, rain amounts of over an inch were observed before precipitation changed back over to snow. With the help of local emergency managers, CoCoRaHS, and cooperative observers, snow accumulation reports of around 6 to 10 inches were observed in eastern Kentucky from this storm. Snow quickly came to an end on the evening of January 6th as the low pressure system tracked out of the region and high pressure built in from the west.
