Winter Storm — Dickenson, Virginia
2025-01-05 to 2025-01-07 · Dickenson, Virginia
Wider weather episode
A slew of wintry precipitation ventured into southwest Virginia beginning on January 5th as a result of a strengthening low pressure system. The event began as snow during the late morning hours of the 5th, but as warmer air aloft filtered into the southern coalfields, a changeover to freezing rain and rain took place. During which time, ice accretion led to multiple down trees and power lines in Buchanan and Dickenson Counties. In addition, over an inch of rain was observed in spots that rose well above freezing during this brief time period. Colder air eventually took claim over the area once more, allowing the end of the event to finish up as snow throughout the day on the 6th. Local cooperative observers in the area reported between 4 to 8 inches of snow had fallen over southwest Virginia during the storm. Snow showers quickly came to an end shortly after midnight on January 7th as the culprit low pressure system vacated the region and high pressure arrived in its place.
