Heavy Snow — Union, Illinois
2025-01-10 · Union, Illinois
Wider weather episode
A winter storm brought widespread heavy snowfall to southern Illinois beginning on the morning of the 10th. The initial round of snow was light to moderate; however, a localized heavier band had developed that extended from Jackson County to Wayne County, Illinois that resulted in warning criteria snow earlier in the day. Wrap around moisture associated with an area of low pressure caused a heavier burst of snow across the entire region before snow tapered off to lingering flurries that evening. Peak accumulations ranged from 4 to 7 inches of snow, with the highest amounts in portions of Perry County, Jackson County, and Franklin County, Illinois. During the daylight hours, lighter intervals of snow combined with sunlight allowed for snow melt on treated roadways as temperatures rose near to slightly above freezing. Schools were cancelled in most counties, with a few closings lingering into the following week. Illinois State Police Troop 10 that serves most of southern Illinois including Alexander County, Gallatin County, Jefferson County and Perry County responded to dozens of motorists, including property damage crashes. Numerous slide offs, cars in ditches and crashes had occurred due to treacherous road conditions. An IDOT truck was involved in a rear end crash on Interstate 57 in Jefferson County, Illinois. One employee was injured in the crash and had to be taking to the hospital. Key Impacts: transportation delays, traffic accidents.
