A trailing shortwave trough was driving a strong cold front through the Great Lakes which arrived in northern New England during the morning hours. Snow squalls formed on the leading edge of the boundary and continued south and east, approaching some of the major highways in the region. Brief whiteout conditions occurred, thanks to heavy snow and gusty winds during the morning commute.
