Wider weather episode
A strengthening area of low pressure moving southeast across Ontario approached the St. Lawrence Valley during the early morning of Thursday, the 5th. Ahead of this surface low, a strong push of warmer air led to snow showers developing during the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, the 4th, with upslope flow enhancing snow showers near the Tug Hill Plateau. As the surface low and strong supporting upper trough approached the area late Wednesday night, snow showers increased in coverage. As the cold front with this system then moved through prior to daybreak Thursday, locally heavy snow showers and snow squalls crossed the area from west to east. Northwesterly winds that developed in the wake of the front led to the development of lake effect snow showers which tapered off later Thursday night. Strong, gusty winds were in place through Thursday evening, leading to localized areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.
