Event narrative

The Shade River near Chester exceeded a bankfull level of 16 feet on the morning of February 6th. The river rose to a crest of around 18.7 feet that afternoon and then returned below bankfull the next morning. While the river was out of its banks, flooding occurred along low sections of Scout Camp Road near the gauge and on the Sugar Run Creek bridge. Agricultural fields and low-lying areas adjacent to the river also observed flooding.

Wider weather episode

On the evening of February 5th, precipitation entered southeast Ohio as a low pressure system crossed through the Ohio Valley. Widespread rain continued into the morning of the 6th, then tapered off in the wake of a cold front that pressed through during the early afternoon. One to two inches of rain fell in portions of southeast Ohio, while locations north of US 50 generally received less than an inch of rain.

As a result of the inundation of heavy rain, southeast Ohio began to observe flooding during the predawn hours on February 6th. Excess runoff led to rises along many local creeks, streams, and smaller rivers. This led to numerous flooded roads through the evening before conditions improved. While high pressure led to drier conditions, minor flooding lingered along parts of the Shade River in southeast Ohio into the morning on the 7th.
