Event narrative

A brief band of heavy snow mixed with sleet moved through the county on the morning of the 10th. A COOP observer south of Lincolnton reported accumulations of snow and sleet around an inch. Roadways became slick from this band and authorities advised citizens to stay home. As temperatures warmed aloft by late morning snow and sleet transitioned to freezing rain. A COOP observer south of Lincolnton observed light ice accumulation on walkways, fences and trees. By late afternoon, temperatures at the surface warmed sufficiently to transition any lingering precipitation to liquid rain.

Wider weather episode

A broad mid-level trough pushed across the eastern CONUS throughout January 10th. The associated surface low pressure and warm advection caused a brief band of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain to develop in the Central Savannah River Area. As temperatures warmed aloft and cold air damming conditions strengthened, any freezing precipitation transitioned to liquid rain by late afternoon on the 10th.
