Winter Weather — Southeast Nicholas, West Virginia

2025-02-16 to 2025-02-17 · Southeast Nicholas, West Virginia

Wider weather episode

In the midst of a strong low pressure system that brought devastating flooding to parts of the state the previous day, colder air charging in on February 16th led to snow showers that persisted across the state through the 17th. Precipitation first changed over from rain to snow in the lower elevations on the morning of the 16th and along the higher terrain later that afternoon. Periods of heavier snow bands sprouted along the I-64 corridor on the morning of February 17th and gave one last decent burst of accumulating snow across central West Virginia. The additional upslope component to this winter event yielded 4 to 8 inches of snow to occur along the spine of the Appalachians, with pockets of 8 to 11 inches noted at elevations higher than 3,500ft AGL. In the lowlands, generally between 1 to 3 inches of snow fell from the 16th to 17th, with isolated higher amounts occurring due to the narrow band of heavier snow production that took place on the morning of the 17th. Snow showers came to an end from west to east on February 17th after the strong low pressure system exited off the eastern seaboard.
