Event narrative

Dense fog with visibilities less than 1/2 mile were recorded periodically at the KCAG ASOS at Craig-Moffat County airport, with most of the period seeing visibility ranging between 3/4 mile and 1 mile. The KHDN AWOS at Yampa Valley Airport reported dense fog with visibility less than 1/4 mile through much of the day on the 7th, with a brief period of improved conditions after 9PM local time. The dense fog then returned after 11:30PM local time, and remained into the morning of the 8th. A dense fog advisory was in effect during this period. Only known impacts were to aircraft operations at Yampa Valley Airport. No reports of damages, injuries, or fatalities were received.

Wider weather episode

In the days after a winter storm that brought accumulating snow to the northwest Colorado valleys, skies cleared and nighttime temperatures dropped off. This allowed trapped low level moisture, supplemented by the fresh snowfall, to condense into dense fog.
