Winter Storm — Howard, Arkansas

2025-01-09 to 2025-01-10 · Howard, Arkansas

Wider weather episode

A strong surge of Arctic air invaded Southwest Arkansas during early January with bitterly cold temperatures and a mix of heavy snow and ice accumulations that began during the early morning of January 9th and continued into January 10th. Overall, total snowfall amounts ranged from around 3 inches to as much as a foot in northernmost counties of Southwest Arkansas. Freezing rain and ice accumulations generally ranged between one tenth to one quarter inch with isolated higher totals in the southernmost counties. Given the heavy amounts of snow and ice, conditions were quite hazardous given the plummeting temperatures in wake of the Arctic air intrusion, resulting in treacherous travel on area roadways during this winter storm event. Very isolated instances of sleet mixing in with the snow and freezing rain also occurred in some areas, but amounts were generally light with only minor accumulations.
