Event narrative

Bursts of snow with intermittent light sleet and freezing rain eventually tapered off in the nighttime hours per Knoxville McGhee Tyson ASOS readings. The highest snowfall report came from the public outside of Maryville at 6 inches. The official TYS measurement was 4.9 inches of snow with a light glaze of ice from freezing rain and sleet. Other reports included 3 inches in Alcoa, 3 inches in Walland, 4.5 inches in Wildwood, 3 inches in Friendsville, and 3.5 inches in Greenback.

Wider weather episode

Low pressure cyclone passing to the south with upper level forcing induced a broad and significant snowstorm across the region, including East Tennessee, which experienced heavy snowfall. A frontogenesis band across southern Tennessee and northern Georgia helped power higher snowfall rates early into the event across southeastern Tennessee, resulting in locally heavier snowfall before warm air advection brought a changeover in precipitation type to icing and eventually to rain.
