A strong upper level short wave trough moved out of western New Mexico into the Texas Panhandle from the afternoon through the nighttime hours of the 19th. A cold front had moved through earlier in the day leading to relatively cool surface conditions. Lift spreading overhead from the upper level short wave trough acted upon moist and an unstable elevated airmass during the evening hours on the 19th. A line of thunderstorms developed across the South Plains producing half dollar size hail in Lubbock County.
