Westerly synoptic winds at the West Texas Mesonet site, Carlsbad Caverns NP, resulted in a maximum wind gust of 70 MPH.

Wider weather episode

As a strengthening low pressure system continued to move into the Upper Midwest, strong west winds overspread much of the southern Great Plains. A strong westerly jet streak behind this developing weather system aided these winds.
