The reduced visibilities and drifted snow led to very hazardous driving conditions...accidents...along with temporary road closures. A tight pressure gradient between intense low pressure near Labrador and high pressure across the Great Lakes supported gusty winds during the 8th. West to northwest winds generally gusted to 35 to 40 mph...with local gusts to around 50 mph. These winds combined with the 7 to 10 inches of snow which had fallen on the 7th produced extensive blowing and drifting snow across Aroostook county. Visibilities were reduced to a half mile or less at times with significant drifting across some roads. The reduced visibilities and drifting led to very hazardous driving conditions...accidents...along with temporary road closures. The greatest impacts occurred on roads along open agricultural areas exposed to the west/northwest winds. Winds gradually decreased during the evening of the 8th which allowed for improving conditions.
