Event narrative
Lack of significant rainfall in the winter and spring months led to the development and expansion of severe drought (D2) across Mainland Monroe County, which began mid-to-late April. By the end of April, the northern half of the county was in extreme drought (D3). Locations within Mainland Monroe County had received approximately 50 to 70% of the normal rainfall total value for that time period. Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) was over 500 across the area.
Wider weather episode
Prolonged periods of dry weather across much of South Florida during the winter and spring months led to the development of severe drought conditions through the end of April.
