Event narrative

Hail was mostly pea size, but some stones were as large as nickels.

Wider weather episode

A line of thunderstorms developed on the nose of a low-level jet, just in advance of a cold front across the central Dakotas. Deep-layer shear of 30-40 knots was largely parallel to the boundary and storms rapidly became linear with spotty damaging wind.
