Wider weather episode
The state of West Virginia was placed into the warm sector of an advancing low pressure system on May 30th in the wake of a lifting warm front. This allowed for strong daytime heating and high moisture levels to act together to create strong thunderstorms during the afternoon. A cold front eventually swept into the area that evening to bring the risk for severe weather to an end, but not before downed trees and power lines were observed in the state as a result of the strong thunderstorm activity.
