Event narrative

A thunderstorm moved through parts of the Town of Hancock. This storm produced a weak microburst, which resulted in uprooted trees and some snapped smaller trees along its path. Some of the uprooted trees may have also been aided by saturated soil conditions. The first visible tree damage was located in a wooded area, before the thunderstorm continued to move northward and crossed Bodoit Road, resulting in more uprooted trees along the road and at some residents' yards along the road. The storm then crossed the East Branch Delaware River and uprooted several more trees on

a small island in the middle of the river. More tree damage and damage to a power pole bracket was observed along Old Route 17 and along NY State Highway 17, before the storm tracked over hills north of NY State Highway 17. The last observed tree damage was located along Tar Hollow Road. Additional tree damage was observed via drone images.

Wider weather episode

An area of low pressure and a frontal boundary lifted north across the area during the afternoon and evening drawing up plenty of moisture from the south and increasing instability. Wind shear values also ramped up during this time, helping to trigger scattered thunderstorms, some severe with locally damaging winds and heavy rain. It was also determined that a microburst occurred in Delaware County.
