Thunderstorm Wind — Eddy, New Mexico
2025-06-09 · near Malaga, Eddy, New Mexico
Event narrative
The Mesonet station NMC36 Malaga recorded a 67 mph wind gust. The station stopped reporting at 10:55 PM MDT as a line of storms neared, but when it came back online at 12:20 AM MDT (well after the line of storms had passed) it showed a 67 mph wind gust. As such, the time that the gust occurred is estimated from radar and from when the station first stopped reporting (which was likely caused by the severe wind gust).
Wider weather episode
A cold front/outflow boundary, coupled with vorticity maxima in the northwesterly flow aloft, resulted in the development of severe thunderstorms in the Permian Basin of West Texas and Southeast New Mexico during the evening and overnight hours on June 9th. Supercells formed initially, but storms eventually grew upscale later that night. These storms produced multiple instances of severe winds (especially the MCS) and large hail. A landspout was also reported in Martin County.
