Amid cold northwesterly flow behind a large area of low pressure over the Canadian Maritimes, a surface trough developed across the southern Great Lakes January 8th into early January 9th. This feature helped focus moderate to heavy lake effect snow downwind of Lake Erie and into Northwest Pennsylvania, with the greatest totals occurring in the higher terrain of southern Erie County. The heaviest snow occurred during the daytime hours on January 8th. Periods of reduced visibility and snow-covered roads led to travel impacts across the area, especially on January 8th. A CoCoRaHS observer in Corry measured 8.7 inches of snow, with spotters measuring 8.5 inches in Union City and 8 inches in Edinboro.
