Wider weather episode
A dome of high pressure brought a period of very hot and humid conditions across eastern New York from June 22-25, 2025. The heat began across the mid-Hudson Valley and southern Taconics on June 22 before expanding across the rest of eastern New York on June 23-24. High heat became more localized on June 25 mainly occurring across portions of the Hudson Valley. Actual air temperatures rose into the 90s for multiple days across many valley areas with Poughkeepsie reaching 100 degrees on June 24. Little relief from the heat occurred at night. Peak heat index values (or feels-like temperatures) were between 95 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit in many locations. The highest heat index values (feels-like temperatures) occurred on June 23 with values between 105 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
Numerous cooling stations were opened during this period of extreme heat. In addition, preliminary data from the U.S. Health and Human Services showed that eight-year records for one day heat-related emergency department visits were set during this heat wave across region 2 which included all of New York state as well as New Jersey. Up to 7000 customers in Bethlehem lost power on June 23, some in part to the heat wave. Other sporadic outages occurred in other locations. An assisted living facility in Bethlehem lost power on June 23 leading in three people needing to be hospitalized, but none of them needed care for heat-related concerns. The extreme heat also prompted several area school districts to modify their schedules for the last week of school. New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for 32 New York state counties ahead of the heat wave which included Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Ulster, Warren and Washington.
