Unusually dry weather continued through the month of July, with severe to extreme drought conditions persisting across the area. Locations across Upstate South Carolina and extreme western North Carolina reported annual rainfall deficits of nearly 11 inches by the end of the month. Water well levels began to descend below record low levels, most of which were recorded during the 1999-2002 drought. The vast majority of major streams across the area continued to run 1-10 percent of normal flow. Agriculture continued to be hard hit, with some areas reporting a 100 percent loss of the corn crop.
