Event narrative
Hail to quarter size was quite brief and intermixed with heavy rainfall.
Wider weather episode
Thunderstorms fired along a convergence zone pushing southeast across southeast South Dakota during the afternoon, with instability as high as 1500-2500 J/kg and modest effective shear of 25 to 35 knots. While storm shear and cold pool dynamics remained balanced, isolated large hail and damaging wind gusts gradually transitioned to the latter before weakening during the mid-evening hours.
