Event narrative

Emergency manager reported flash flooding developed across a small part of northwest Jackson county after 2 to 3 inches of rain fell in less than two hours. The primary impact was to small streams and tributaries west of Thomas Valley Rd, where an unnamed stream inundated and washed out a bridge and a part of the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. Additionally, Bumgarner Branch overflowed its banks and was rerouted into the yard of a home, with an occupant of the home requiring rescue.

Scattered slow-moving thunderstorms moved across the North Carolina mountains during the overnight and early morning hours. Localized torrential rainfall resulted in flash flooding across part of Jackson County.
