Flash Flood — Fayette, West Virginia

2025-09-20 · near Summerlee, Fayette, West Virginia

Event narrative

Eighteen to twenty inches of swift moving water was observed over Summerlee Road.

Wider weather episode

Thunderstorms started to develop mainly along and near the mountains of West Virginia on the afternoon of September 20th and then continued into the evening a disturbance and accompanying cold front moved over the area. These storms produced one and a half to three inches of rain, though there were some pockets of higher amounts. Since conditions were very dry leading up to this event, heavy downpours over parched soil predominantly resulted in runoff. One instance of flash flooding was observed due to runoff in Fayette County. Activity tapered off overnight with drier conditions returning shortly after midnight.
