Wider weather episode
On July 29th, 2025, excessive heat developed across southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi, where heat indices surged into the 113'115F range. The surface analysis showed a weak pressure gradient and high dewpoints pooled across the northern Gulf Coast beneath a sprawling ridge aloft. At 500 mb, broad ridging with heights near 594'596 dm dominated the southern U.S., suppressing convection and reinforcing subsidence, which enhanced compressional heating. This combination of oppressive humidity and stagnant upper-level support allowed dangerous heat stress conditions to persist throughout the day.
